Our History
Positive Adventures was born of humble beginnings in 2004 when Ryan Shortill moved across the country from his native New Hampshire home seeking fresh opportunities to make a difference in the world. The quest lead him to San Diego, where he struggled to make ends meet and find a job that satisfied his vision of serving the greater good. One day after feeling defeated, alone, and disappointed with life, he had an epiphany that changed the course of his life. Instead of being consumed with making money, he decided to dedicate his time to volunteering.
This volunteering adventure proved to be the catalyst for the birth of Positive Adventures, LLC. He was working with children on the ropes course of a youth-oriented program when he met two young participants named Rose and Ari who forever changed his life. Invigorated by their enthusiasm, he began to envision a year-round program in which people of all ages and backgrounds could explore healthy outlets, increase self-awareness and connect with others. Ryan saw the need to create a community in an outdoor setting away from schools and offices where people are empowered to experience life’s potential.
